Berlier gambles and hits the jackpot in Kansas
By Danny Boyd.
August 5, 2008
There was lots of good hard racing Tuesday night in Kansas as the KFC Truck Series headed into town for the Hewlett-Packard 150.
Brian Berlier started on the pole and lead much of the first few laps.
A scary moment came early on for Bryer Wilds when he got sideways, and Cody Hunley would get into him. Both continued on though on the lead lap.
The race stayed green and there was plenty of hard racing between Berlier, Dana Hamilton, Stephen Musclow, and Harry O'Neill.
A few laps later Berlier started to separate himself from the pack until a mechanical failure sent him to the pits. That would hand over the lead to Musclow.
A round of green flag stops occured Hamilton taking the lead.
The competition caution would fly on lap 38. Berlier, having made up two laps, was back on the lead lap.
Berlier would eventually move through the pack and retake the lead.
A self spin by O'Neill would put him a half lap back, but a caution would save him a few laps later.
The caution would come out on lap 55 for contact between Hunley and Musclow. Hunley tapped Musclow from behind and sent him spinning.
That would set up a 36 lap race to the finish, with fuel being the great equalizer.
Three drivers took the gamble to stretch it out, but only Tina Berlier was able to make it work. She would run out about 1000 feet from the finish but would be able to coast to the win.
Hamltion would finish second. O'Neill, who was another using strategy finished third after running out of fuel in turn 1 on the final lap. Jeremy Murray would also run out of gas going down the backstretch on the final lap and would come home fourth. Wilds would come home in fifth.
Brian Berlier led the most laps but a speeding penalty late resulted in a seventh place finish.
